Time in Class

  • 60 minutes of ELA Instruction

During this time, students are focused on improving their spelling, building their vocabulary, developing good reading habits, practicing active reading strategies, and becoming world class readers and scholars.

  • 30 minutes of HHH: HHH means Happy Half Hour.

The last 30 minutes of every ELA class is devoted to HHH.  This time is essential for students reading success and investment.  With over 500 books in each ELA classroom, this year students can select texts from our classroom libraries.  The texts are leveled and students have been taught to select books they are able to read at without extreme frustration. Students know exactly where to go to find books that meet their reading needs.  It is not the goal for students to read the most difficult books possible, but read more often and enjoy reading.

  • 60 minutes of Reading Group

Every day, students will meet with their reading group teacher where they will read and discuss books with their classmates and teachers. These groups are selected based on the students reading level and will work to develop their interest in reading and help them reach their goal of growing two years in reading.
