Kaila Goes to Space

January 17, 2009

Me wearing a space suit, and wearing a MAG! Very uncomfortable.

Me wearing a space suit, and wearing a MAG! Very uncomfortable.

This morning was cold outside but warm inside my winter clothes. As soon as we all were all out side of the house we went straight to Georgetown University and got lost and ended up at the Georgetown University hospital, then we had to find our way back. There was limited time till we had to be at Healy hall in a couple minutes, I felt like I heard the time ticking. So we finally made it on time, and went inside to warm up. Then we headed back outside to start the tour, almost every building we learned about, went inside to warm up. There are two cannons outside of Healy Hall, also there was a seal before you walk in, no one dares to step it. Students believe that bad things will happen to you if you do, you won't graduate in four years. If your parents step on it, then you won't get the financial aid you need to attend. Healy Hall was named after Patrick Healy. He was the first African American president of Georgetown. I also learned what a Hoya is. A Hoya means "what is".

Today while we were at the US Capitol we learned many facts. Some examples that we learned about outside of the US Capitol is what they do inside of it. The Capitol is used to make and enforce laws. That is where our laws come from. Another place that we learned about was the Supreme Court. It is the highest court in our country. That is where if a law is passed that is questionable you may take it to the Supreme Court and they will solve it for you if it is felt that they law may be unconstitutional. The last place we learned about outside the US Capitol is the Library of Congress. In it, there are lots of large important law books. There is also lots of ancient artifacts.

Finally the last place we went to was the Air and Space Museum. In this Museum we learned about space and flight. We learned about the different layers of clothing the astronauts need to wear before going off to space. I tried on a space suit! Did you know that astronauts wear MAG's, which are like diapers? MAG stands for Maximum Absorbent Garment. We also went through the star station. I learned many things about space at the Air and Space Museum.
This was my second day full of exuberant learning experiences in Washington, DC.

Please come and read my third blog about my next day of learning.

Hi Kaila: We are all so very proud of you. I hope you will in future years when reflecting on this event, understand that this was not just a historical event for America, but in all likelihood represented a major event for all mankind. It is our hope that this event will be the inspiration for you and your generation to set new standards and priciples by which the human race can peacefully coexist on this palnet. Love Uncle Henry

So now that you have braved the cold and the crowds on the mall, what impressions do you have the events you have witnessed in D.C.? I am watching the parade and am wondering where all of you are and how much you have learned about our history, nation and people from this trip. Keep on writing, if not here, at least in your journal. I will be waiting to hear your stories first hand when you return. Ms. Marie

I am so proud of your achievement in essay writing. Isn't The Capitol Building an amazing piece of our U.S. History? Did you meet any representatives while you were there? I look forward to reading more about your experiences in D.C..
