About This
School
|
KIPP Raíces Academy is a
college-preparatory public charter elementary school located in unincorporated
East Los Angeles. Founded in summer 2008, KIPP Raíces currently serves 200
kindergartners and first graders. One grade will be added each year until the
school reaches capacity in 2012 with 500 students in kindergarten through
fourth grade. KIPP Raíces is operated by KIPP LA Schools, a non-profit
charter school management organization. KIPP LA operates two additional KIPP
schools in Los Angeles.
After just a year and a half, KIPP
Raíces students are already demonstrating impressive results. In 2008-09, the
founding class of kindergarteners showed mastery of all subjects by the end
of the school year, as measured by the national SAT-10 test. Ninety-one
percent of kindergarteners scored at or above the national average in reading
and 77 percent scored at that level in math, compared to both kindergarteners
and first graders. Student achievement was especially impressive given that
68 percent of kindergarteners were classified as English Language Learners.

Summary of
Most Recent Site Inspection
|
The California Charter Schools Association Joint
Powers Authority (CCSA JPA) conducts an annual site visit at KIPP Raíces Academy. During a site visit, student, parent,
and employee safety are discussed as top priorities. The Risk
Assessment process is intended to identify hazards that could result in an
injury to any of those groups, or could otherwise negatively impact the
financial well-being of KIPP LA Schools. The most recent site visit did not
identify any recommendations or necessary corrective action.

The School Accountability Report Card (SARC),
which is required by law to be published annually, contains information about
the condition and performance of each California public school. More
information about SARC requirements is available on the California Department
of Education (CDE) SARC Web page.
For additional information about the school, parents and community members
should contact the school principal or the district office.
I. Data and
Access
DataQuest
DataQuest is an online data tool located on the CDE DataQuest
Web page that contains additional information about this school and comparisons
of the school to the district, the county, and the state. Specifically, DataQuest is a dynamic system that provides reports for
accountability (e.g., Academic Performance Index [API], Adequate Yearly
Progress [AYP]), test data, enrollment, graduates, dropouts, course
enrollments, staffing, and data regarding English learners).
Internet
Access
Internet access is available at public
libraries and other locations that are publicly accessible (e.g., the
California State Library). Access to the Internet at libraries and public
locations is generally provided on a first-come, first-served basis. Other use restrictions
include the hours of operation, the length of time that a workstation may be
used (depending on availability), the types of software programs available on a
workstation, and the ability to print documents.

Opportunities
for Parental Involvement (School Year 2008-09)
Opportunities for
Parental Involvement (School Year 2008-09)
|
At KIPP Raíces Academy, there are numerous opportunities for
parent involvement. The principal opportunity for parents is through
the Parent Action Committee (PAC), which meets once a month and is open to
all parents. The PAC plans special events and fundraisers, and discusses
ways in which to improve the school. Through the Parent Action
Committee, parents have opportunities to volunteer to organize and set up
events, such as the winter concert and the carnival, to donate supplies from
their businesses or employers for fundraisers, and to assist with school
maintenance projects. Besides the PAC, parents also have opportunities
to volunteer independently by supervising lunch or walking students between
campuses, chaperoning field trips, and helping to prepare classroom materials.
In addition, parents are invited into each classroom once a month for
Love of Reading, during which time parents read to small groups of students.

III. School Climate
School
Safety Plan (School Year 2008-09)
This section
provides information about the school's comprehensive safety plan.
|
KIPP Raíces Academy has joined a federally funded consortium
of other Los Angeles area charter schools in order to develop a comprehensive
safety plan. The school spends a year
in the planning process which involves attending informational meetings,
collaborative planning sessions, conducting supervised practice, getting
feedback from external observers, and establishing an Incident Command
structure. In years following, monthly
safety drills are held to ensure that all students and staff are prepared in
the event of an emergency or natural disaster. KIPP Raíces
Academy’s operations team also goes through a regional focusing session at
the beginning of each year to make sure that the safety plan is ready to be
executed throughout the school year.
