About KIPP Comienza Community Prep

Comienza is the Spanish action verb: begin. But the significance of comienza is lost when simply translated into “begin.” Comienza evokes a sense of immediate action, an action that may ignite a new beginning towards voice; towards strength; towards change.

KIPP Comienza strives to continuously improve its instruction each year in order to stabilize the school and make it a sustainable place for all. Currently, they are focused on increasing rigor and authenticity of instruction so that students become critical thinkers and problem solvers who are civic-minded, rising leaders. Additionally, the team prioritizes family involvement. Family presence is seen everywhere on the KIPP Comienza campus, from families reading in Spanish to students, to helping in the classroom, to fundraising for important school events. The community of Huntington Park is tight knit and invested in the education of their children.

Our History

KIPP Comienza Community Prep opened in the summer of 2010 and serves 520 kindergartners, first graders, second graders, third graders and fourth graders under the leadership of School Leader Shirley Appleman. Our elementary school has expanded annually, reaching capacity with grades K through 4 since the fall of 2014. In 2017, KIPP Comienza Community Prep received the National Blue Ribbon Schools Award based on overall excellence and closing the achievement gap among student subgroups.
